A New Studio Mate…
I got myself a March Hare!
For the month of March, I agreed to foster a rabbit from a local rescue called Only Sunshine Sanctuary. I’ve never had a rabbit before and it’s been a very cool experience to share space and observe this new kind of creature.
So, her name is Nisenan like the indigenous land we are on, and she was found dumped at a park and very pregnant. She had made a nest in the middle of an open field and had zero survival skills. She gave birth the day after she was rescued. I learned that rabbits use their fur to line their nests, and this explained the giant bald spot on her belly that I find sweet, strangely sad, and endearing.
As much as I would love to keep Nissy, as I’ve come to call her, I think ultimately I don’t have the ideal space for her. Rabbits are definitely great for minimalists, who don’t have a ton of power cords that can get chewed on or a million storage nooks and crannies to get lost or stuck in. Nissy must be fairly young, because she is very energetic and these are her exact favorite activities. She is very brave and curious and sweet, often flopping down near me after she’s had her fill of zoomies and chewies. I’ve felt honored to gain her trust and observe her becoming both bolder and more relaxed. I think if she isn’t adopted by June I’ll take her back for another foster stint :)
(July Update!) Nisenan ended up finding her forever home <3 and I’ve since fostered another rabbit who also got adopted! The second rabbit was a different type of breed, and had a very different personality - more info on that in a future post, I think.
