About the Artist:
Linsey Martin is the creative behind Mālama Macramé. Find her on IG: @malamamacrame
Linsey enjoys expressing her creativity and connecting with the community through teaching the textile art of macramé—an art believed to be originated from 13th century Arab weavers. Although an ancient craft, it still finds its way into the present world through functionalities and art. Linsey first found macramé as an 18 year old living in Maui, HI. making friendship bracelets with shells she found from the beach and selling them to tourists in local shops on the island. Macramé is her way to stay present, a kind of meditation. Mālama Pono, meaning “to take great care,” represents the deep root of aloha spirit and respect for the land and sea that is influenced in her artwork and teaching style. This phrase is reflected in her passion to create functional pieces for family, friends and community. What started out as making plant hangers, rugs and hanging baskets for her home and loved ones eventually became something she truly loves spending her time and efforts doing!
Now, she shares this creative outlet through workshops! Working as a group to create macramé is a vital way to discover the interconnection between building relationships with one’s community and finding one’s inner creativity.
