“A Girl’s Big Dream”

August 2022

secondhand fabric, prefabricated sun shade, cordage

12’ x 12’ x 12’

This piece was inspired by large scale installations I’ve seen that use transparent colored textiles and the natural environment to make light, color, and wind interact in playful and whimsical ways. I wanted to see if I could recreate a similar effect.

I “quilted” large swaths of thin fabrics, all secondhand and already in my stash, to an existing sun shade. The overall effect is one of a child’s bedroom canopy or makeshift fort, casting pink and golden shade onto those who stand under it. It seems to represent my childhood fantasy of being a “real artist” in more ways than one. I hope to either create more canopies like it or put more intricate details on this existing one, adding to my big dream.
