‘California Modern II’ - Baby Quilt for Sevonna
2024
To commemorate the birth of my cousin Ariel’s daughter, Sevonna. Classic Art Deco colors and shapes mixed with high femme Barbie energy seemed to be a perfect fit for my fashionable young cousin and the luxe lifestyle her and her baby will enjoy together.
“California Modern” Quilt
2023
Fabric remnants, cotton batting, thread.
To commemorate the birth of Alex, the second child of my good friend Meghan. The nursery is white with rainbow polka dots on the wall, so this quilt plays off that theme. The happy colors mixed with a minimal design led me to call this quilt ‘California Modern’ and I think it will fit perfectly in sunny SoCal. It’s also fun to imagine this being a modern take on the classic game, Twister.
“Full Circle” Quilt
2023
40” x 46”
Fabric remnants, upcycled jeans, cotton batting, thread.
To commemorate the birth of Shiloh Rose Heaton. The 'back' uses improvisational piecing of the front's leftovers as well as some upcycled fabric from a bedsheet and some old jeans. The piece of denim with the paint splatter came from a pair of pants belonging to Shiloh's dad :) gifted to me by Shiloh's mom, not knowing how it would someday come back to them, full circle.
Molly’s Friendship Quilt
2019
Molly is a wonderful friend and fellow lover of art, fashion, fabric, plants and cinema. She let me stay with her in San Francisco while I had a short term teaching job at the Academy of Art. We were both in transitional periods of our lives and we often found ourselves sitting on her back steps or on her couch, shooting the shit and enjoying our time together.
While living with her, she generously humored my need to rearrange and organize the living space. Inspired to do some spring cleaning, she purged her collection of amazing fabric scraps and gifted them to me. I knew they were dear to her, collected during her days of working at the iconic Britex, so it of course made sense to show my gratitude to her by using those scraps to make a quilt.
I divided the fabric into a spring side and a fall side, used a simple improvised strip method for piecing, and hand quilted it all on her coffee table, often while watching fantasy sci-fi and documentaries with her. This quilt is full of fond memories and the love that is often specific to female friendships.
Baby Quilt for Ramy
2018
Ramy is the first child of my dear friend Meghan. She lives in LA and likes very modern design. She told me she painted one wall of the nursery mint green. I came up with this bold, somewhat Deco-inspired design for a baby quilt which I then hand quilted and added a small sleeve for a rod so that it could double as a wall hanging.
Lap Quilt for Elizabeth
2016
This quilt was requested by a former partner of Elizabeth. They were moving to California from New York and her partner told me she had an orange wall tapestry that she loved, and could I make something that matched that? I then created this improvised piece using deep jewel tones that would complement the orange. It now hangs in her home music studio where she writes beautiful songs.
